What is TLC Diabetes?
For many people with Type 2 diabetes, daily management demands can seem overwhelming. The Telephone-Linked Care (TLC) Diabetes Programme is a sophisticated interactive telephone system designed to support people with type 2 diabetes in the comfort of their home and at no cost.
Users call the TLC system weekly on a 1800 number, from any phone at any time of the day or night, to engage in a "conversation" about their diabetes management. TLC interviews and converses with the user via pre-recorded statements and questions. It 'listens' to answers and records them in the database and uses them to provide feedback and tailor current and future conversations.
The programme uses new technology to send participants' blood glucose results from a mobile phone to the computerised telephone system. Users will then phone the system to receive feedback on their blood glucose results. The TLC system also gives feedback and advice on diet, medications and daily exercise to assist in the control of diabetes.
The TLC system is designed to complement the care already provided by the participants' health care team by further monitoring, educating and coaching individuals with Type 2 diabetes.
Example TLC Call
Listen to the TLC Diabetes training call (wav, 2.7MB). The training call is the first interaction between user and TLC system. It is designed to provide a practice call during which the caller can hear instructions on how to interact with the TLC system before making the first call related to diabetes.
